MCPS Special Ed Teacher
When our old daycare provider moved away, we were so worried that we would not be able to find comparable care. My son was starting kindergarten and we would be leaving my 3 year old daughter at a new place without her brother for the first time. My daughter was very shy and we did not know how it was going to play out, but boy were we glad when fellow teachers recommended Mrs. Shaheen! In the two short years that she was there, my daughter grew confidence with her speech, confidence in making friends, and confidence with all parts of "school". She always came home excited to show me the work she had done and to tell me about the books they read at circle time (that Mrs. Shaheen carefully chooses at the library for particular seasons, situations, and the interest of each child). The outside play time she received to explore and try new things was also super beneficial to her confidence and social skills. Oh, and the songs!! She learned so many adorable songs/rhymes that were playful, fun, and educational. It was always evident that Mrs. Shaheen knew how to engage the children in fun activites and they didnt even know they were learning. As an educator in MCPS, I was quite impressed. But, I was most impreased by how my daughter hung on her every word. She loved the praise and attention she received and constantly talked about her! She is getting ready to start kindergarten in a few days, and she still talks about her constantly! I cannot say enough amazing things about Mrs. Shaheen's patience and generous nature. She surely loves the kids as her own, and is therefore able to foster a love for friends and kindness in each of them.
While my son never attended daycare at Mrs. Shaheen's, he loved going to pick his sister up after school because Mrs. Shaheen was so sweet and interested in his life too. She listened to everything the students said about their home life and remembered it, thus learning tons about my son as well and making him always feel special. It was a treat for us all to chat at the end of the day during Pick Up time.
My daughter cannot wait to start "big kid school" because Mrs. Shaheen has built her up and told her she is "ready." However, she is devastated that she will not see her every day. While I too know she is ready for Kindergarten, I am not ready to leave Mrs. Shaheen's either.
